As a parent, you’ve likely scoured the internet for the best ways of removing lice and come across the concept of lice suffocation. Since its known that new age lice do not respond to anti-lice medication people have come up with many creative memories to remove the pesky critters and suffocation seems to be something many parents are trying.
How is lice suffocation supposed to work? Lice have holes across their bodies which they use to breathe; suffocating lice require clogging their breathing holes using thick substances such as petroleum jelly, mayonnaise, olive oil and shrink-wrap.
Let’s take a closer look at lice suffocation methods:
Using mayonnaise to suffocate lice requires you to cover your child’s entire head in mayonnaise. The mayonnaise does block the lice’s breathing holes but they do not die immediately. In fact, lice can hold their breath for up to 8 hours so in order for you to kill them off using mayonnaise you’ll have to cover your child’s head in mayonnaise and shrink wrap it overnight. In the morning, rinse your child’s head under running water to wash away the dead lice.
The thing is, that even if you do manage to kill all lice (highly unlikely), the nits will not be harmed at all. Also, it will be a while before you spread mayonnaise on your sandwich again!
2) Petroleum Jelly
Just like mayonnaise, petroleum jelly can also be used to suffocate lice. Again, it would have to remain on the head for at least 8 hours for it to have an effect and the nits will not be affected. Petroleum jelly is much thicker than mayonnaise making it much harder to spread on the hair. It is also more difficult to wash off.
3) Olive oil
Olive oil is easier to spread on the head but it isn’t as effective in suffocating lice.
Suffocation may kill lice but it’s an awfully messy and inconvenient process. There are much easier and less time-consuming ways of dealing with lice.
